Bucket elevators are used in many industries where combustible dusts are present, such as the grain handling, agricultural, food, coal, wood and wood-processing, metals, and other industries. Bucket elevators have a distinct advantage over other conveying methods when significant vertical lifts are involved. Bucket elevators are typically less expensive, use less energy, and are mechanically simpler than other conveying methods such as pneumatic conveying systems.
However, when materials that will produce combustible dusts are conveyed by bucket elevators, this presents a significant explosion hazard and a high explosion risk compared to other conveying methods.
